The Open House proved quite a success with 55 families in attendance.
Carolann Fleming, Administrator of Chicago Public Schools Fine and Performing Arts Magnet Cluster Program,
started the program by touting Waters as THE Model Fine Arts School for Magnet Cluster Schools in Chicago.
This is because, she said, of the way they so successfully teach and integrate the Arts into their curriculum.
"Whenever my husband and I think about moving I go to realtor.com and punch in 60625, because Waters is the
school I would want my children to attend," she stated.
Amy Vecchioni, the Fine Arts teacher, led a "Funky Snowman" art project, while many children took part in a
school-wide Bug Hunt. Waters 8th-grade students led group tours throughout the school showing off the Media Lab,
Computer Lab, Art & Music Fieldhouse, and newly painted kindergarten and preschool room (it was too frigidly cold
outside to give a proper tour of the Ecology Garden). All enjoyed refreshments that were generously donated by The
Grind, Cafe Selmarie, and Beans & Bagels.
A thick crowd gathered in the PreK Room with their toddlers, who were free to take part in all the preschool
materials, the Sand Table being a huge favorite. Many were interested in a TUITION-BASE PreK that we are hopeful
will start in the fall. We only need 18 families to commit to this by March 15, 2006 to get it!
Visitors were also able to see the school's vision of infrastructure updates. Colorful paint swatches, carpet
blocks and tile samples were displayed to show what the school hopes to accomplish by the end of Summer 2006.
A great thanks to all the businesses who graciously donated items for this success:
