Save the date: Saturday, December 1
Waters Holiday Craft Market

The Waters Holiday Craft Market Committee is working diligently in recruiting top notch makers. If you know a talented artist please pass the following information along.

CALL FOR ARTISTS & MAKERS
Lincoln Square/Ravenswood Holiday Craft Market
Saturday, December 1, 2018
10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Waters Elementary School
4540 N. Campbell Ave., Chicago, IL 60625

To Apply: Applications now open for Lincoln Square/Ravenswood holiday/DIY juried craft market. Ideal way for newcomers or small-scale/Etsy shop vendors to showcase DIY talent and work, while supporting a Chicago neighborhood public arts magnet school and its students. Hundreds of neighbors, families and friends attend this annual holiday market for food, fun, community and shopping locally together. Applications accepted from now through October 8; notifications via email by October 15. Because we receive many more applications than we can accept and to keep the items offered at the market within our quality standards, Waters Craft Market is a juried event. A table fee of $75 will be collected once you are accepted for costs associated with the event; 100% of proceeds of your sales will be your own. To apply, please email the following information to waterscraftmarket@gmail.com:
  • Type “2018 Application” in the subject line
  • Your Name & Business Name
  • Email address & Website URL
  • Street Address & Phone number
  • Brief description of your work
  • Price point (a range and average price)
  • 3-5 jpeg images of your work, a digital portfolio, Etsy site or a website URL

Keep in mind the following when you apply: Your items must be made by hand and DIY craft-oriented in approach. We aim to offer a diverse line of goods, or specialized products that are available in a variety of styles. The jewelry category, for example, is incredibly competitive; if you offer jewelry along with other items, this is to your advantage. The average price of your items fit our goal of promoting accessible, affordable handmade/DIY goods; prices typically range between $1 to $75. All items must be creatively and professionally presented.

The Waters Holiday Craft Market will be promoted extensively on websites and social media, and via flyers and street banners. For additional information, please email waterscraftmarket@gmail.com.  We look forward to reviewing your application!

Volunteer Opportunities at Waters

9/20/2018

Picture
There is a lot going on at Waters this fall, and whether you are new to the school or skilled at public school volunteering, we need you! Please take a look at our volunteer opportunities and let us know if you would like to help.

Volunteer Positions
Book Fair Help: We are in need of a volunteer to serve as book fair co-chair, alongside Hilary Prosser, who is able to devote approximately 3 to 4 hours of time leading up to the book fair and a significant amount of time during the week of the fair. Tasks include implementing and tracking All For Books campaign, developing and distributing book fair materials, set up, tear down and working the fair with Hilary. Waters currently has two fairs scheduled during the year: the fall fair is tentatively scheduled for November 28 to December 1 and the spring fair is tentatively scheduled for the end of May. Ideally, Hilary is looking for a co-chair to help run both. The book fair always comes and goes so quickly! The kids love it and it is so fun to see the excitement first hand. Also, it is a great opportunity to interact with Waters staff and families. If interested, please email WatersToday volunteer coordinators.

Boys Soccer Coach: We are need of a coach or coaches for 5th/6th and 7th/8th boys soccer. The season usually runs from the end of September to late October/early November and games take place once to twice a week, Monday through Thursday after school. Home games are played on Waters' field, and the team carpools to all away games. For more information, email Mr. Orlov or the volunteer coordinators.

Circle of Help: This program provides a service for Waters Elementary families in need of support. Circle of Help aims to alleviate the stress of financial hardship on students and their family members by offering assistance through community aid. We are in need of individuals to assist in organizing, compiling and delivering supplies. This is a program that provides school supplies, coats, boots, food and any other item necessary to ensure that Waters students can focus on their education. It is a small time commitment, usually 1 to 2 hours per month, but has a lasting impact for our students and their families. If interested, email the volunteer coordinators.

Ongoing Volunteer Opportunities
WatersToday volunteer coordinators, Vanessa Summer and Hope Nichols, will be sharing volunteer opportunities as they arise throughout the school year. Check out the WatersToday fundraising events page for a list of annual activities – all need volunteers. Also be sure to sign up for the Green Notes email (see "Subscribe" in right column) and like/follow the Waters Facebook page to hear about new requests from teachers and staff. Have some free time or flexibility in your schedule? Get on the Waters Volunteer Helper List by emailing us.

We promise there is a volunteer opportunity to suit every Waters parent, no matter how much time you have to spare. Your choice to help out can be as easy as spending an hour or two on a teacher project, setting up an art show, working in the garden, or judging the science fair. Fundraising events like the Holiday Craft Market, Big Night, the Scholastic Book Fair and more, are happening all year long, offering parents a fun way to get to know each other and support our great school.

Important Volunteer Info: If you plan on chaperoning a field trip, helping out at Harvest Day, or any other volunteer opportunities at Waters, then you need to fill out the CPS volunteer application. It only takes a minute to complete and the whole process is really easy.
(On the application, parents are "Level 2" volunteers and do not need to go through the fingerprint criminal background check.) After submitting the online form, visit the Waters main office at your leisure and show identification. After that you’re all set to volunteer – and we can’t wait to meet you!

Update: 3rd/4th Grade Boys Basketball League

9/6/2018

Picture
Update on Team, September 6:
We are officially part of the Chicago Mustangs youth league that plays at Northside College Prep. Right now, it looks like we'll have a 3rd/4th grade combined team. Games will commence mid November. There is a $700 league fee that will be split based on the number of players. Parents with boys still interested in this league should email Coach Mitch Langeler.

Previous Post, August 26:
Is your 3rd or 4th grade son is interested in playing basketball in a local league this winter? We need at least 8 boys, ideally 10, to form a full team. The cost will vary based on that number, however, it will be under $100 per family for the whole season. The season runs from November 18 through February, with games on Sundays – double headers on those days except for holiday weekends. Games are at Northside College Prep, practice TBD based on finding a place. The program manager expects us to respond before Labor Day with a full team pulled together. Let's do this!
